Ruscus hyperglossum
The Butcher's Broom is an evergreen perennial. Despite its' appearance it has no leaves. The "leaves" are infact cladodes, which are broad, flattened stems. The cladodes are a dark, waxy green. During spring a small, creamy, white bract protrudes from the middle of the cladode. After the flowering season, a red, fleshy berry appears in the place of the bract. Ruscus hyperglossum can tolerate full sun, however for a richer colour place in a partially shady position. They prefer a sandy, loamy soil and watering twice a week for optimum growth, though it is also drought tolerant.
