The Common Spike Rush is an evergreen perennial which lives in boggy to aquatic soils. it has a tufty habit and its tufts are aquatic to 0.35 metres. Its leaves are smooth, cylindrical and dark green in colour. In spring to autumn small spikelets grow on the tips of the foliage that are cream to brown in colour. The Spike Rush prefers poor drainage, heavy-clay soils and medium-loamy soils. It also prefers full/part shade. The Spike Rush tolerates frost and short dry periods.
