Doryanthes excelsa
The Giant Lily is an unusual Australian native plant. Its' numerous, fibrous, sword-like leaves, grow in a clumping formation. During October and November bright red flowers, surronded by brown bracts are grown on a long stems. The fruits is a woody capsule, which breaks open in January and February when it ripens. Will grow in deep, rich, well drained soil in full sun or part shade. It needs to be kept well watered, especially during the warmer months. While the foliage is frost tolerant, the flowers are not.
