How To Plant

The process for planting a plant or tree

  • Ensure the potted plant is well watered
  • Dig a hole in the desired location
    • Depth of the pot
    • Double the width of the pot
  • Gently remove pot from plant
  • Tease open the roots
  • Place plant within the hole
    • Base of plant should be at ground level
    • If grafted, this part needs to be exposed
  • Place fertiliser amongst the soil removed
    • This helps to ensure it is spread evenly around the plant
  • Back-fill the hole and gently firm the ground around the plant
  • Place mulch around the base of the plant
    • This:
      • prevents weeds from emerging
      • improves water retention
      • supports the overall appearance
    • Various types of mulch are available, depending on the overall appearance you are after:
      • Wood chips
      • Stones
      • Straw
  • Water in the plant once this process is complete
    • This will encourage the fertiliser to start and assist with the development of the plant
Aftercare

Maintenance of your plant once it has been sown

  • Watering
    • Depending on the season, watering should be done in accordance with local water restrictions and as follows:
      • Summer – As often as possible
      • Autumn – Weather dependant / soil condition
      • Winter – Weather dependant / soil condition
      • Spring – As often as possible
  • Weeding
    • Removal of unwanted pests will encourage more growth from the plan
      • Giving a better overall appearance
  • Mulch
    • Replenish mulch once every year
    • This is dependent on the type of mulch and how much disturbance there is around the plants
  • Pruning
    • Trees
      • Deciduous trees: Autumn
      • Evergreen: Generally do not require trimming (trim to node if desired)
    • Shrubs
